Seeing me for me

I wrote to my friend Sarah Black last year, floating the idea of her taking some photographs of me.

This is part of what I emailed her:

"What I'd really love is some quiet photos of me. Photos that show my heart. My soul. Too often I hide behind being loud, the clown. I'd love photos of me that show my quieter side, that shows my ability to be still, to be a little dreamy."

And these are some of the photographs she took.

I trusted Sarah implicitly during our shoot. I trusted that she would make me look beautiful. I worked hard to drop my inhibitions, to not worry about my physical imperfections. I let it go, and let myself just be. It was the very best thing I could have done.

Sarah's photographs make my heart sing and my skin tingle. She herself is an amazing soul, who shoots with heart and connection. She made me feel beautiful, and I thank her over and over for that.

Christmas comes early.

I'm wrapping Christmas presents while watching new episodes of Gossip Girl (Christmas is the time for indulgences right?), and I'm starting to get excited about Friday. Yes, Friday, Christmas day. We're faking Christmas a day early in my house because we're heading off on our holiday on Christmas day. What?! Like you wouldn't do it if you had two children who are yet to know what day it is if it meant you go on a tremendous holiday. I've even altered our advent calendar to end a day early. I'm just that sneaky.

(My parents switched my birthday on me one year. We were moving towns on the day of my actual birthday. So we celebrated it the week before. More convenient, apparently. So I just consider my little switcheroo balancing out the world.)

Changing the date doesn't bother me, as the meaning will still the same. Spending time with the family, eating good food, watching the children play with their gifts. Sure, it'll be a day early, but it'll still very much be Christmas.

Have a splendid Christmas all you lovelies. Make sure you rattle the presents under the tree. After all, we never actually really want to wait until Christmas anyway.

See you next year!

Boyce-Cam family [Geelong, VIC]

The love this family feel for this child is palpable. I could have reached out my hand and touched it. Their love was in every smile, every kiss of his forehead, every laugh.

Thomas returned their love ten fold. He did it with his bright smiling eyes, his giggle, his relaxed nature. Watching them all interact with Thomas reminded me what family is all about.

Our afternoon was interspersed with rain showers, so we sheltered under trees and umbrellas, chatted about this and that and cursed the savage mosquitos. We were undeterred though, and I loved being able to photograph this gorgeous family.

Miles

Dear Miles,

Thank you so so very much for the worm you brought me this morning while I was having my breakfast. It was very considerate of you to put it onto a plate. I especially liked it when you dangled it exceptionally close to my nose. That was the best bit.

Love Mum

Sweetheart session - Kellie and Mark

You absolutely cannot beat the onset of spring. Especially when you spend it in a peach blossom orchard. A pink whirl of goodness.

I've just come back from a weekend back up in Shepparton. Miles and I went on a (very) mini-holiday, visiting friends and family. Throw in a glorious photo shoot, and it was a great trip.

I met Kellie and Mark over 12 months ago, and now all of a sudden their wedding is 6 weeks away. When I met them Kellie was pregnant. Now Phoenix is one, and seeing him toddling around reminded me how much time flies.

I'm kinda tired from the drive, so I'm going to leave the words out (they're not making much sense in my head) and let the photos do the talking.

Big week on the horizon

I spent this past weekend in the company of my dearest friends. There was much talking, red wine drinking, lamb roast eating, and general high spirits. These girls (not all of whom are pictured) are my family. I would walk the earth for them. Sharing a weekend with them is like being home. Complete with home made blueberry and almond tart.

Big week coming up. I'm going to be announcing my new workshop and opening up places on Thursday. I'm going to be announcing it first in my newsletter, then 24 hours later here on my blog.

Oh, and what's the new workshop about? Well, a little clue is that it's not about teaching photography, but for people wanting to take their photography past the hobby stage. (Kinda big hint!)

Have a great week!

Fresh air

I had to get out. After a week nursing the boys, and now starting to get sick myself, I had to get out of the house.

So Murphy and I went to the beach. It was a simple and wonderful as that.

Finding solace

Water is my solace. Whenever I'm sick, I go to water. During both my pregnancies when I was vomiting all day every day for 9 months, I would sit in the shower floor and let the warm water wash over my back. It was the only thing that could soothe me. Being in water was the only thing that made me feel human. Even now when I'm unwell, whether it be a sore throat or emotional fatigue, I go to water.

Miles does the same thing. He has a virus - sore muscles and a gluggy throat, as he described it. He's been using water to soothe himself. Today he requested two baths. Both lasted almost an hour. He lay still, very still, and let the water wash around him.

He closed his eyes and imagined himself well again.

Quite time

I'm at my computer desk with a cup of peppermint tea and am knuckling down and editing photos. I find the task quite relaxing, meditative even. I listen to my favourite podcast or let Last.fm choose my music for me. I zone out completely and the hours fly by easily. Some photographers bemoan the time spent in front of the computer, but I find solace in it. It's my quiet time, my 'me' time.

It's especially wonderful when I'm editing photos like this. Both their expressions just make me melt.

I'm off to boil the kettle to make more tea, then back to editing.

MAEVE

I used to strictly be a book reader. There was always so many books I wanted to read that I never got around to magazines. I would flick through friend's copies of Rolling Stone, then go back to whatever tome I was reading at the time. Then when I moved to Melbourne I discovered the free street presses, and would read them on the tram on the way to uni. From then on I was much a a book reader as a magazine reader. I discovered the joy of being able to borrow magazines from the library (especially great when you're a broke uni student), and the delightful sin of reading the reallly trashy ones in the doctor's waiting room.

I've even written for a couple, including a rather hilarious turn as a columnist for Practical Parenting magazine. I wrote about what it was like to be a young mum with no clue about what to do with a baby. It was honest, I bared my warts and all. Yes, I even wrote about getting caught without a nappy and having to fashion one out of one of those green eco bags.

And now I have the chance to write again for a magazine. MAEVE magazine is launching tomorrow, and I'm so proud to be a part of it. MAEVE is an online, free magazine. They describe what they are all about best on their website:

"MAEVE appreciates that you are all grown up, that you are intelligent and street smart. That you are raising kids and creating a new generation. You have a desire for knowledge and a thirst for real life content. You want inspiration. You want to know what other people are doing and how they are doing it. How they are parenting. How they are achieving. How they are loving. How they are living. We all do it – its human nature. You want to see life in a state of fluidity. Full of flaws and controversy. Bursting with pride, success and failure. Naked ambition and true friendship. Hardship, sorrow and grief. Celebrations, milestones and mindfulness.

No bullshit.

Its about making your life better. Giving you something to think about. Evoking feelings in you and allowing you to redefine who you are and where you want to be. MAEVE gives you solidity in its purest form. Strong in presence and sustainable by nature

MAEVE treats you like the intelligent woman you are. We offer insight, inspiration and intelligent reading. MAEVE seeks to enrich and redefine the life you already have. Knowing that you have worked hard to be where you are now."

Brilliant, right?

Some of the other people writing for it are my friends, and I can't wait to read their stuff. They are all wise and generous women who will add a terrific dynamic to the pages of MAEVE.

I urge you to subcribe, it's free after all. I've got a fiction story in there, and I'm terrible nervous about it. It's been eons since I've written fiction, but apparently the saying 'it's like riding a bike' applies.

Kudos to Kate and the team for pulling it all together, and adding what will be another sublime title to the already wonderful collection of Australian magazines.
