Practicing my circus skills

For the next few months I'm going to be walking around with a proverbial pine cone on my head.

meaghancok

It's all about to get crazy busy for my little boutique. I'm excited to get out there and be a part of so many gorgeous couple's weddings. I'm less crazy about finding enough hours in the day to do all the things I need to do.

I'm not complaining however (whining is so 2001). Instead I'm going to write legible to-do lists, ban myself from window shopping on Etsy, get enough sleep and go to the beach. Yes, go to the beach. My pact with myself this wedding season is to spend my time away from work not thinking about work. This means switching off, letting go, stressing less and remembering that everything can wait just a little while. This means no checking emails on my iphone at the beach! Hopefully all these measures will help me keep everything in balance.

And I'm going to go carefully, and hope the pine cone doesn't come crashing down.

Photo obviously taken pre- hair cut. Thanks Nathan!

ROCK WHAT YOU'VE GOT photography business workshop

I needn't have worried. I stressed, and lay awake at night, for nothing.

"Empowering" - Andreana

My first ever ROCK WHAT YOU'VE GOT photography workshop was on Sunday, and the day went off without a hitch. The television didn't fall off the table, my presentation worked, there was enough food for everyone, and I remember to speak slowly to people could understand me (well, most of the time).

"Helpful, insightful, inspiring" - Glenn Hair

I couldn't have asked for a more perfect group of people to share my first workshop with. They were beyond awesome, and really helped me to relax and enjoy the day with them. It felt like a conversation, which is exactly what I wanted it to be.

"I am much more confident and inspired to start now" - Sherriden Harding

This is my 'when all else fails shut your eyes and hide' look.

'Meaghan, you are a bundle of energy and information. Thank you' - Sara Taylor

Look! People smiling! I was excited when I saw this shot because it's evidence that for at least a millisecond I was somewhat entertaining.

meaghancook02

The workshop was totally a group effort, and I couldn't have done it with out:
*Lyndel at The Loft where the workshop was held. All that glorious light, and the opportunity to do some creative dance if we so desired.
*Carol at Noble Foods. We were totally spoilt.
*MJ from Something Special. Her cupcakes really do rock the house.
*The team at Press Here for all their help putting my books together, and not rolling their eyes when I asked silly questions.
*Sarah Bowen for helping me set up and keep the day running smoothly. And putting the kettle on.
*Lauren Bent for these great photos from the day.
*Amba for looking after the children all day so I could spend the day talking.
*Miles and Ryan for putting in a brief, but extremely cute, appearance.

meaghancook05

I'm really looking forward to seeing where all these wonderful people take their photography careers. They are all bursting with talent and enthusiasm, and I have absolutely no doubt that they will go on to do some pretty amazing things.

I'm 100% humbled by the response, and exhilarated from the day.

And because it seems the workshop wasn't so bad after all, I'll be announcing more this week. Sound like a plan?
Sign up to the newsletter at the bottom of my blog and facebook for the dates to appear later in the week. I'll also pop them here too.

The good kind of tired

I'm curled up on the couch, watching old Big Bang Theory episodes and eating left over scones. My first Rock What You've Got photography business workshop has been over for a few hours now. And I'm so tired.

But I realised that it's the good kind of tired. That one where you can hardly keep your eyes open, yet you feel really content. Despite being exhausted, and having a scratchy throat (got to expect that after talking for seven hours), I'm feeling blissfully happy. It's kinda like the hard earned thirst VB talk about, but substitute the beer for my bed. I've had such a big day, and feel I've really earned my sleep tonight.

The workshop was great. So great. Beyond great. I'll talk more about it later in the week though (with more pictures than just the door to the loft where we had the workshop). For now for me it's back to the telly and the scones.

meaghancook2

Thanks to everyone who sent their words of encouragement and support before the workshop. I carried your thoughts with me through the day.

Nerves of steel (or a lack thereof)

My first ROCK WHAT YOU'VE GOT photography business workshop is tomorrow. And oh my gawd, I am so nervous. When I'm nervous I get really really cold. Physically freezing. So I've spent the day with two jumpers and a scarf on. My hands are like ice, and Miles wouldn't let me rub his back like I do every night before he goes to sleep. 'No mum, your hands are colder than the freezer'.

The emotional manifestation of my nerves is that I loose the plot. I 100% forget where my head is. I can't think straight. I have to think hard to remember my own name. When I'm nervous I turn into a puddle of cold custard on the floor.

This happened to me before pretty much every one of my weddings last year. The nerves always set in the morning of the wedding. I consequently do ridiculous things such as lock my keys in the car, drive off leaving my camera bag on the front step, or get half way to a wedding and realise I have no shoes on. We've learnt to deal with it by putting Amba in charge of getting me ready. Before I leave the house he makes sure I have my camera, lenses, memory cards, batteries, and that I'm completely dressed. It's a system that seems to work as I always have my shoes on when I get to the wedding (knock wood).

So knowing that I get flustered is making my nerves worse about tomorrow. It's not that I'm having to talk in front of people (although I'm convinced I'll look like a peanut at least some of the time), nor is it having to talk about how I run my photography business which is causing me grief. It's the logistical stuff like 'what if I can't get the TV to work?' or 'what if I talk so fast that no one can understand a thing I'm saying and it's all over half an hour after it starts?' I've got visions of tripping over my own feet and going face first into the morning tea. I'm not very co-ordinated, it's a very real possibility.

I think I'll just have to warn the people as they walk in the door that anything that can go wrong, most likely will. And could they kindly refrain of taking any photographic evidence if I do happen to end up making love to the scones.

And here's a gumball machine from Luci and Vladimir's shoot. It's pretty. And I'm using it to distract myself!

Wish me luck!

Shiny and new

New things make me happy. At the moment my new hair cut is making me very happy (bye bye mumsy bob. Hello funky short hair). I'm listening to some new music which is making me very happy. And I'm kinda giddy over our new front garden.

This shiny and new wedding album that I've added to my collection is also making me quite happy indeed. Tickled pink even.

Before and after

It's been rainy. So rainy. No chance to get outside and take any photos, so instead I thought I'd show the before and after of one of my photos from Allison and Hayden's recent photo shoot.

I knew as soon as the shutter closed down over this photo that I loved it. Allison and Hayden were walking away from me, and I called Allison's name. She looked up and gave me this super sweet half smile. The smile combined with the dreamy light, and I knew I had it. ( I especially love the way the sun is landing gently on her hair)

BEFORE

1/640 f2.8 iso200 80-200mm

beforeandafter-1

Not much to do in photoshop as all the strong elements of the photos are already there. Photoshop for me is not about changing a photo so much that it becomes unrecognisable. Nor is it about trying to save an average photo. It's about enhancing what is already there in the photo. So I used the levels to clean the haze up a bit, added some contrast, bumped the colours a bit. And I think I even warmed it up just a smidge. A smidge of a smidge.

AFTER

And that's it!

Introducing ... photography business workshop!

geelongphotographer

When I started my business, I was fumbling around in the dark. I knew I wanted to take my photography to the next level, but had no idea how. Just ask Amba how many frustrated nights I spent in front of the computer trying to work it all out. I spent months in a bleary haze of website design, pricing, sourcing products, etc. It.was.terrible.

One thing I realised during all this is that there aren't too many resources where all the information is all in one place. You've got to search and search through forums and websites to find it all. If you find anything at all.

So the seed for this workshop was planted way back then, and it's come to fruition now.

geelongweddingphotographer01

I'm happy, and proud, and excited to be kicking of this photography business workshop. You can see all the details on the workshop website.

The workshop is about helping people wanting to start a photography business through the maze. I want to equip people with the knowledge and tools they will need. And to spare them the long nights in front of the computer getting nowhere!

The workshops are also about helping newcomers to the photography industry enter it with their eyes wide open. I always believe it's better to nurture, whether that be nurturing children, plants, or new photographers. I want to help newbies find themselves, and find their own little corner of the photography world.

The workshop is on September 26th 2010 down here in Geelong (in the most beautiful loft space). The WEBSITE has all the details, including a contact form to get in touch if you'd like to come along.

My day

At the workshop, one of the girls asked me about my day and how I manage to fit everything in. I said something about flying by the seat of my pants and my days being a constant muddle.

But I've been thinking about it some more and realised that there is some rhyme and rhythm to my day. There really has to be in order to get everything on my very far reaching to do list done. It doesn't always get done, but I am able to knock some tasks over every day.

Mornings
A couple of mornings a week I go and do some huff and puff. I way out of shape since having the kids, so this is my attempt at reeling myself in and getting a little bit fitter. I find that these days I'm actually more productive. I hate that there's truth to the fact that the benefits of exercise extend further than fitness.
When I get home the kids are up and eating breakfast. While they're enjoying their morning TV I use this time to check emails that have come in over night and try to reply to as many as I can.
The rest of the morning is taken up by kid activities - walks, riding bikes, baking, visiting friends. I take my iphone with me and keep track of emails coming in. I don't usually reply, but I like to know what's there.

Afternoons
While the kids are eating lunch, I again sneak time on the computer. When I got my lap top at the end of last year it changed how much I can work during the day. Now I can sit at the table at the kids, eat lunch with them, all while placing print orders or getting back to potential clients.
Miles and Ryan don't sleep in the day any more, so there goes that time to work. So I don't even try. I learnt very early on that there's no use trying to edit photos or do anything that takes more then 3 minutes. Miles and Ryan can sense me trying to concentrate and do everything in their power short of burning the house down to ensure that I stop working. So we get out and about instead. I try to tire them out as much as possible because I really need them in bed early. Long walks and bike rides are perfect for this.

Nights
Once Miles and Ryan are in bed for the night, my real work day begins. By now the emails are backed up and I've always got photos that I'm working on (whether it be for clients or my own personal work). I've learnt to try to get the photo editing done first, otherwise I get lost on the internet and never get back. I blog at night too. Sometimes I get a few posts ready, then shoot them off over the next few days. Pending how busy I am, I can work anywhere form 2 to 5 hours at night. I have however cut back dramatically on my computer time at night. I could work and work for hours, but I've learnt to draw the line, and to even have nights off. I hang out with Amba, watch my fave shows on tellie ( hello United States of Tara) or go out and catch up with friends. Once my business exploded and I became really busy, I realised that my work had the potential to take over my life if I let it. So I try to make real effort to switch off from it all. I still find it hard to do, especially because the window in a day to get some solid work done is so small. But if I don't I actually end up more stressed and frazzled. An no-one appreciates a stressed and frazzled Meaghan, especially those living in this house!

So that's roughly how I spend my day. It differs slightly when wedding season is in full swing (less TV watching, more hard core photo editing going on), but that's the general gist. It's by no means the most productive way to run a business, but while I've got two little ones home with me, it's the best way to fit everything in.

* Meaghan

If anyone else has any questions they'd like answered, feel free to email me meaghan@meaghancoook.com . I get lots of emails from people wanting to know things about running a photography business and I'm happy to answer them. Lots of generous people answered my questions when I was starting out, so I figure it's just continuing the chain to do it too.
